Winter Warmth in the Canaries
Itinerary
Your Itinerary
Funchal is the capital and largest city on the island of Madeira, off the coast of Portugal. Home to just over 100,000 people, the city was founded in 1424 and quickly became an important port of call for European ships.
Named for the abundant fennel trees in the area, Funchal has many beautiful parks and gardens, including the Madeira Botanical Gardens, which offer a stunning view of the city as well as more than 2,000 species of plant life. This is also a stopping point for the Funchal Cable Car, which goes up the mountain to Monte. The Madeira Botanical Gardens is one of the most popular attractions in Funchal, but also worth a visit are the Jardins Do Palheiro and the Monte Palace Hotel Gardens.
Funchal is home to lovely old buildings and cultural sites, including the 15th-century Santa Clara Convent, the São Lourenço Palace, the Colegio Church, and Sé Cathedral. However, even aimlessly wandering through the 'Old' city centre is a pleasant way to spend a day, with the port and promenade, and numerous shops, cafés and restaurants lining the winding streets.
The city is known for its excellent cuisine and local Madeira wine, and foodies will have no trouble finding treats like fresh seafood and baked goods to satisfy their appetites. To burn off those calories, there are plenty of active pursuits to enjoy in Funchal including golf, swimming, paragliding, boat trips, and the unforgettable Levada Walks.
Also known as ‘La Isla Bonita’ (the beautiful island), La Palma is typified by lush forests of pine, laurel and fern which contrast with the rugged splendour of the gigantic Taburiente crater. The island is dotted with attractive villages, which are a delight to discover, and the capital Santa Cruz also makes for an interesting day of exploration. Perched on the edge of the volcanic crater of La Caldereta, Santa Cruz comfortably blends modern architecture with old colonial buildings. Perhaps visit the fascinating Natural History Museum, stroll around the historic quarters and the Plaza de Espana or travel a few miles outside the city to the exquisite Church of Our Lady. If you enjoy shopping, you can find reasonably priced silver jewellery, leather goods and beautifully embroidered clothes, tablecloths and napkins, a speciality of the Canary Islands.
One of the main attractions of San Sebastian de la Gomera is its beautiful beaches. The Playa de la Cueva is a popular spot among locals and tourists alike, known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and pristine white sand. It is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or simply relaxing while taking in the breathtaking coastal views. Another notable beach is Playa de San Sebastian, conveniently located near the town center and offering a range of facilities and services, making it ideal for families and water sports enthusiasts.
Aside from its stunning beaches, San Sebastian de la Gomera is also known for its captivating natural landscapes. The Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-visit destination for nature lovers. This lush greenery is home to unique and endemic flora and fauna, making it a paradise for hikers and nature enthusiasts. From its highest point, Alto de Garajonay, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the island and even glimpse neighboring islands on clear days.
For those interested in the town's history and culture, San Sebastian de la Gomera offers plenty of fascinating sites to explore. The Torre del Conde, an ancient tower built in the 15th century, is a prominent landmark that serves as a reminder of the town's historical significance. The Church of La Asunción, dating back to the 16th century, is another notable attraction, featuring beautiful Gothic architecture and religious art.
Another must-visit attraction in San Sebastian de la Gomera is the Casa de Colón, or the House of Columbus. This historic house, believed to be the residence of Christopher Columbus during his stopover in 1492 on his way to the Americas, has been turned into a museum. Visitors can learn about the explorer's journey and its impact on the island's history.
Food lovers will also find a haven in San Sebastian de la Gomera. The town is known for its delicious traditional cuisine, which is heavily influenced by the island's agricultural resources and proximity to the sea. Fresh seafood dishes, local cheeses, and palm honey are just a few examples of the culinary delights that await visitors.
San Sebastian de la Gomera is a well-connected town, with regular ferry services connecting it to the other Canary Islands, making it an ideal base for exploring the archipelago. The town's small size and relaxed atmosphere, combined with its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, make it a perfect destination for those seeking a peaceful and authentic island experience.
In conclusion, San Sebastian de la Gomera in Spain is a hidden gem that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and culture. Whether you're looking for a relaxing beach getaway, an adventurous hike through lush forests, or a glimpse into the island's rich history, this charming coastal town has it all.
Budget airlines and affordable fares have turned Spain into a beach resort haven for northern Europeans wishing to escape their own (sometimes) damp and dreary climates. With sun-bleached beaches and a favourable exchange rate for most travellers, it's easy to see why Spain is such a popular choice for an unforgettable beach holiday in Europe. An incredible 53 million people visit Spain each year (the second most in Europe after France), and the country deserves its formidable reputation as a tourist haven.
Some may feel that the Canary and Balearic Islands have been overrun by tourists, and this is true to some extent. Tenerife, Lanzarote, and Mallorca have become synonymous with cheap package holidays and warm beer, and Ibiza's reputation has been somewhat tarnished by the revellers frequenting its famous dance clubs and beach parties. However, even in these crowded resort areas you will find many magical, unspoilt corners awaiting discovery.
Spain is comprised of numerous autonomous regions, offering great variation within one country. The hundreds of miles of Mediterranean coastline provide ample opportunity to get off the beaten track, and the country's vibrant cities and colourful festivals will amaze and delight even the most seasoned traveller. Art lovers can get lost in the Spain of Gaudi, Dali, and Picasso, of Goya and Velazquez - proudly displayed in the country's museums and galleries.
Spain's Pamplona is a unique experience of thundering streets that vibrate to the rhythm of man and beast during the annual running of the bulls, and while the whole country celebrates each February with the Carnaval, no place does it better than Sitges.
Barcelona is Spain's showcase of the unique architectural style of Gaudi's bizarre organic turrets and balconies. For a more provincial experience, the Valencian town of Buñol goes wild every year with the La Tomatina festival, a time when the region's surplus tomatoes following the annual harvest are dumped on the streets and pelted about in a friendly riot.
Spain is also a country rich in heritage, and the historic cities of Toledo, Salamanca, Seville, and Granada promise a wealth of early Christian and Moorish buildings and monuments, as well as the remains of some incredible medieval sites. Spain has six cities that have been declared UNESCO World Heritage sites, more than any other country in the world.
The most northeasterly of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote has embraced the tourism boom with a more laidback feel than its popular sister islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Nature is still the biggest attraction on this small volcanic island, which measures only 38 miles (60km) in length and 13 miles (21km) across at its widest point.
Lanzarote's beaches are varied and dramatic, including long stretches of golden sand, some good surf spots, and some rugged, hidden coves. Camels are often used to transport goods and sometimes tourists on this desert-like island, across the dry volcanic ash that covers most of the landscape. UNESCO declared the whole island a Biosphere Reserve in 1993, and visitors exploring the dozens of enchanting and unique spots on the island will soon see why.
Lanzarote's capital, Arrecife, is a small town on the eastern coast, its harbour packed with fishing boats. Although the town itself has little to offer in the way of sights or nightlife, it does have a magnificent beach, El Reducto, which has been granted Blue Flag status by the European Union. A promenade runs along the beachfront around the San Gines lagoon with its fine golden sand and placid waters.
Lisbon has somewhat rediscovered itself in recent years, reclaiming its rightful place as the 'golden city' of southern Europe. Much of this is due to the officials of Lisbon having elected to rejuvenate the city during the 1990s. This ongoing focus on the future has meant making the most of the attractions, both old and new.
One day can span centuries as visitors move between the picturesque medieval section of the Alfama district and historic São Jorge castle to being amazed by the spectacle of the futuristic Oceanarium of Lisboa.
Infrastructure has also been improved, with additions like the impressive Vasco da Gama Bridge across the River Tagus, which links the city's airport to a network of national motorways and has facilitated access to other parts of Portugal. There is also a new showcase railway hub, the Gare de Oriente, which is the pride of a new modern suburb on the east bank of the Tagus, creating an even better link between Lisbon and the rest of Europe. But if tourists really want to see the city in style, they must be sure not to miss a ride on the famous Tram 28, which winds its way through the oldest parts of the city and gives visitors a feel of the history and rich culture Lisbon has to offer.

The result is a style of food that centres on delicious sea food, spiced curries and grilled meats, all freshly cooked to authentic recipes, and served to you by our warm and attentive waiting staff.
The Arctic Room
Designed to mirror the Indian Ocean Room, the Arctic Room leads into the main Aurora Restaurant. Beautifully decorated with shades of blue and grey to reflect the nature of the Arctic, it’s adorned with Fred. Olsen’s hand-selected artwork collection by Keith Grant, and is the ideal room for intimate meals as well as hosted breakfasts and lunches with our specialist speakers.

Gratuities
We know from the wonderful feedback we receive that our crew are at the heart of the Fred. Olsen cruising experience.
Typically, gratuities are charged at £5.00 per person, per day for guests aged 12 and over. This amount is split equally between your stewardess and restaurant waiter, and will be automatically added to your on board account. While very much appreciated, these gratuities are voluntary, and therefore can be adjusted or removed completely at Guest Services on board the ship if you wish; and you are welcome to tip personally if you prefer.
For those guests sailing before our 2026 cruises, we are confident that you’ll wish to reward staff on board for the attention you receive, and while tipping is entirely at your discretion, we pride ourselves on the service offered to our guests.

Funchal
Madeira
Most people have heard of the Portuguese island of Madeira, but not many know exactly where it is. Located more than 600 miles (966km) southwest of Lisbon, and off the west coast of Morocco, it is a mere speck in the vast Atlantic Ocean. Madeira, along with its sister island of Porto Santo, is actually the summit of an undersea mountain. It rears up with craggy cliffs from the warm blue Gulf Stream waters in one of the deepest parts of the Atlantic.
It features one of the world's highest ocean cliffs, soaring 1,933ft (589m) above the sea, which presented a forbidding sight to the ancient Portuguese mariners who first discovered the island archipelago in the 15th century. In fact, Porto Santo and Madeira were the first 'new worlds' that were colonised by Henry the Navigator in his quest to explore the world.
Madeira is tiny, just 13 miles (21km) wide and 35 miles (56km) long, and has no beaches. But it does have an Eden-like beauty with its rich volcanic soil having turned it into a botanical wonderland and agricultural treasure trove. Most of the indigenous thick forest was destroyed in a fire created by the first Portuguese colonialists to clear it for farming. Today however, the island blooms with colourful masses of fragrant orchids, bougainvillea, frangipani, wisteria and geraniums. Fruit and herbs grow on the hillsides and in ravines, and the mountain slopes are terraced with orchards and vineyards. The island has been termed a 'floating garden'.
Madeira's most famous export is its fortified wine, and with nearly 14,000 plots, there is a big variety to try. Vineyards like Fajã dos Padres and Silva Vinhos offer tours and tastings, and the Funchal Wine Walk is a good way to get a taste of this historical delicacy without leaving town.
Madeira is accessible by air, mainly from Lisbon to the airport near the capital, Funchal. There is no regular passenger ferry to Madeira but cruise ships regularly dock here, bringing thousands of visitors to the island each year.
Lanzarote
Lisbon

San Sebastian de la Gomera
La Gomera
Known as the ‘Round Isle’, La Gomera is one of the oldest and smallest of the Canary Islands. Perhaps overshadowed by the obvious charms of its neighbour, Tenerife, from a distance this cone-shaped volcanic isle with its massive grey skyline can appear foreboding. But once ashore, a different world awaits discovery. Steep valleys and ravines hide a host of surprises such as terraced fields and laurel rain forests. The climb to the top of the island reveals breathtaking views and some rare flora and fauna in the mist-covered heights of Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With a relatively modest tourist industry and less explored than its neighbouring islands, La Gomera is a fascinating place to visit. San Sebastian is the capital and main port of the island, set on the east coast and with a distinctly rural feel, with a few small plazas and colourful houses lining the hillside. The port is famous for its visit by Christopher Columbus, who stopped here in 1492 before sailing to the Americas.
La Palma
